Blossom No.39 is part of my ongoing body of work The Blossom Series, through which I explore the transformation of natural imagery through photography, digital image-making and hand-printed processes. The process begins with a photograph of blossom, which I then digitally manipulate before translating the image into a physical screenprint.
The original floral form remains recognisable, while petals, stems and details are reduced into bold areas of flat colour, expressive line and abstracted shapes. The contrast between the pale yellow ground, muted blue forms and deep green details creates a graphic composition in which colour becomes as important as the botanical subject. The close cropping further removes the blossom from its photographic context, encouraging the forms to be viewed independently.
The work reflects my wider interest in transformation, exploring how a single image can move through different processes to become something materially and visually new.
